Questions & Answers

Everything you wish to know.

The questions we are asked most, answered plainly — about the balm, its botanicals, and how to make it part of your days.

The Balm

A concentrated facial balm built on just six natural ingredients. A barrier-restoring complex of shea butter, jojoba, and vitamin E carries a sacred triad of frankincense, myrrh, and spikenard into the skin — each sourced at the highest grade the earth offers.

Not an oil, and not a cream. An anhydrous balm, it's solid at rest — it releases to the heat of your skin, absorbs, and leaves behind softness and a quiet gloss rather than a film.

The scent comes entirely from the botanicals — there is no synthetic fragrance. Herbaceous frankincense opens bright and clear, giving way to fig, resin, and a spice the memory cannot quite place, before settling into the warmth of sacred earth. It blooms on contact and softens immediately.

A soft, solid balm in a natural, ivory tone that comes from its unrefined shea butter base. There are no dyes and no added color — what you see is the botanicals themselves.

All of them — and dry, reactive, mature, and stressed skin in particular. Because it is non-comedogenic, it suits blemish-prone skin as well. As with any new product, we recommend a patch test before your first full use.

Yes. Press it into the face and neck, or anywhere that asks for nourishment — dry patches, cuticles, elbows, legs, and even the backs of the hands. A small amount goes a long way wherever it is used. Not intended for internal use.

It can be pressed gently into the delicate skin around the eyes — simply avoid direct contact with the eyes themselves. On the lips, a small amount is fine. Because the balm contains botanical essential oils, patch test first if your skin is easily sensitized.

No. The Healing Balm is a nourishing treatment, not a sunscreen, and offers no SPF. For daytime, apply your separate sun protection over it once it has absorbed.

Each jar holds 30g. Because the balm melts and spreads, only a small amount is needed at a time — used as a nightly facial treatment, most find a single jar lasts two months for the face, and less if used on the entire body.

The Healing Balm is where we begin — our founding release, and for now our only product. More is in quiet development, made with the same care and patience. Join our list to be the first to know when something new arrives.

Ingredients & Safety

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Boswellia Frereana (Frankincense) Oil*, Commiphora Myrrha (Myrrh) Oil*, and Nardostachys Jatamansi (Spikenard) Oil*.

*Certified organic.

Every ingredient was selected to be non-comedogenic. The balm is deeply nourishing, yet formulated not to block pores — a rich treatment your skin can wear comfortably.

All of our ingredients are of natural origin, the botanicals being certified organic, others being uncertified organic, and others natural.

Both. There are no animal-derived ingredients, and nothing we make is ever tested on animals.

Generally, frankincense, myrrh, and spikenard essential oils are well tolerated when used on the skin with carriers. As with any botanically active product, we recommend a patch test before first use, and discontinuing use if any irritation occurs.

Shea butter is pressed from the nut of the shea (karité) tree, so the balm may not be suitable for everyone with tree-nut allergies. If you have a nut allergy, please consult your healthcare professional before use and patch test first.

Yes — none of the six ingredients are derived from gluten.

Because the balm contains essential oils, we recommend consulting your healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, or managing any sensitivity. Your provider knows your circumstances best.

The Healing Balm is made for human skin and external use only. It contains botanical essential oils, and some essential oils can be irritating or harmful to animals — cats in particular — especially if licked or ingested. Keep the jar out of your pets' reach, avoid letting them lick freshly applied skin, and speak with your veterinarian if you have any concerns.

It was made with sensitive and reactive skin in mind — a short list of ingredients chosen to comfort rather than provoke. We still recommend a patch test before your first full application.

Even gentle, natural ingredients can occasionally cause sensitivity in some skin, which is why we recommend a patch test before first use. If you notice any irritation, redness, or discomfort, stop using the balm. Mild sensitivity usually settles on its own once you discontinue use; if a reaction is severe or persists, please seek advice from a healthcare professional. You're always welcome to reach out to us at support@shepherdskin.com.

No. There is no added fragrance and there are no fillers — the scent you notice is the botanicals themselves. Six ingredients, nothing else.

Using The Balm

Warm a small amount between clean fingertips and press it gently into cleansed skin. It is best used in the evening, when skin does its deepest repair. You can also use it at any time of the day, depending on your preference for using a moisturizer.

Less than you might expect. A small amount melts and spreads easily, so begin with a little, warm it between your fingertips, and add more only if you need it.

Yes. Use a small amount and give it a minute to absorb before applying makeup, so it settles into the skin first. Many prefer to save it for the evening, when there is time for it to sink in fully.

Yes. As a balm, it belongs at the very end of your routine. Keep in mind that some skincare can react with other products, so please patch test. It's often best to try the balm on its own before incorporating other products.

Comfort and softness are often felt right away. Visible changes — calmer, more even, more cared-for-looking skin — build gradually with consistent use over the weeks that follow. As with all skincare, consistency is everything.

Storage & Shelf Life

Keep the jar closed, at room temperature, and out of direct sunlight and heat. Because it is a natural balm, warmth will soften it and cool will firm it — both are normal, and neither affects how it performs.

It can soften, and that is expected of a natural balm made without stabilizers. If it warms or melts in transit, simply let it return to room temperature; a brief period of refrigeration—10-15 minutes—helps it set evenly. Shea butter that cools slowly may develop a fine, grainy texture as its natural fats recrystallize. This graininess is characteristic of unrefined shea rather than a sign of spoilage, and it dissolves on contact with the warmth of the skin. The surface may also set unevenly, with a slight depression, film, or mottling. None of these affect how the balm performs.

For best results, use within 24 months of opening. Unopened and kept away from heat and light, it holds its quality for up to two years. Because it is made without synthetic preservatives, fresh is always best.

Yes. As a welcome, new customers receive 10% off their first order when they join our list. Beyond that, we hold occasional seasonal Jubilee offers — join us to be the first to know.

Not at this time — each balm arrives in its own jar. It is something we may explore down the road.

Not yet — but a subscription option is on its way. Join our list and we will let you know the moment it is ready.

We keep our packaging deliberate and minimal. The outer box is kraft, and the jar is glass, both chosen to be recyclable. We avoid excess material wherever we can.

Because skincare is personal and hygienic, all sales are final. If an item arrives damaged, defective, or sent in error, we may refund or replace it at our discretion. Please review the ingredient list and patch test before use. See our full Return & Refund policy.

Reach out to us at support@shepherdskin.com within 48 hours of delivery with a photo, and we will make it right. For any other issue, please contact us within 10 days of delivery.
