Maydi — the King of Frankincense. Grown not in soil, but in limestone cliffs in Somaliland. The trees take root in the rock itself. They cannot be planted. The seeds find a fissure to grow or they don't, and the trees that take hold endure for generations.

Ownership of these trees is hereditary, passed from father to son, and a single family will know which of the cliff-bound trees belong to them across generations. To harvest, men ascend with a curved blade called a mangaf, score the bark by hand, and return weeks later to collect the resin that has wept and hardened on the trunk. The work is dangerous. The yield is precious.

The same Sanaag region gives us Myrrh — a smaller tree, a darker resin, the same families tending both. What frankincense was to the temple, myrrh was to the burial. It was carried to the burial of Christ in quantity that would seem extravagant today. Seventy-five pounds.

Jatamansi grows where few plants can. Between 3,000 and 5,000 meters in the Himalayas, on misted slopes too steep and too cold for cultivation, the spikenard root pulls its fragrance from soil that will only grow it for a single window each year. The plant is small. The fragrance is in the root.

Harvest happens in October and November, when the leaves begin to fade and the rhizomes hold their fullest oil. Collectors dig by hand, pulling each root from cold soil and replanting a portion to ensure the next generation. Spikenard cannot be cultivated. Every drop of jatamansi oil in the world begins with someone climbing a mountain.

Across northern Ghana, where the shea tree has grown wild over the savannah for as long as memory holds, the harvest belongs entirely to the women of the villages. The nuts are gathered from the ground beneath the trees, cracked open by hand, roasted over fire, ground into paste, churned in clay vessels, and rendered into the soft golden butter that has protected West African skin for generations. The work is generational. Mothers teach daughters. The knowledge does not exist anywhere else.

Jojoba is native to one place on earth. The Sonoran Desert — the dry expanse that crosses southern Arizona and Baja California — is the single native range of Simmondsia chinensis. The plant is a desert shrub: drought-tolerant, slow-growing, stubborn. Its seeds are pressed once a year, and the liquid that comes out is not technically an oil at all. It is a wax. The closest natural match in the plant world to the sebum your skin already produces.
